Evan Lewis’ first book is a delight! Subtitled ‘Renaissance Inspired Designs for Contemporary Crafting’, the spiral bound book is 163 pages full to the brim of designs that embroiderers will love! Florals, borders, lettering – every page contains a beautiful design. There are notes throughout the book on what has inspired Evan’s designs (Elizabethan, Stuart, Opus Anglicanum periods) and on how you could change the size and rearrange to create your own sweet bag in the case of the section of Elizabethan designs. Evan has also put in a few pieces in the same style but using his local New Zealand plants. At the end of the book are a few pages showing examples of design, then the design in colour and then interpreted in embroidery – the inside covers also have some of the Elizabethan designs in colour.
The book was given a wonderful review in Threads (the New Zealand Guild Magazine) where the author suggested keeping the book hidden if your partner crafts in other mediums like woodwork!)
And if the girls in my studio are anything to go by – the box of 20 books arrived in time for the last two classes and the girls bought half of the stock I had got in!
