Memories of Central Park is one of the many UFO’s that I’ve finally finished in 2020.  While in Central Park in New York in 2013 I saw a stunning garden of orange poppies underplanted in nepeta plants.  The gardener that planted them probably had no idea that he had used a triad colour theory to create the stunning display – but I decided then and there that I was going to do an embroidery inspired by them!

The poppy petals were stitched in 2014 and the nepeta leaves shortly after.  While teaching away in South Australia in January 2020 I was inspired to pull it out and start working on the nepeta petals and then later in the year the poppy leaves.  I’ve enjoyed every minute of this piece but it is a large project – so it’s joining the range of ‘Extreme Embroideries’ on my website.

It’s worked on a background of pearl silk dupion which has a lovely sparkle to it.  The foliage is painted onto the background (dyes included in the kit), and then the embroidery is worked in a range of silk threads – Gumnut Yarns Stars, Thread Gatherer Silk n Colours and Colourstreams.  Finally a little silk ribbon is added.  The design size is 18cm x 20cm.
