The inspiration for these gloves quite obviously is the gorgeous gauntlet gloves of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries but further to that, the inspiration came from a group of my students who asked me if I could design some gloves for them to embroider. We each selected a favourite motif of the period and I set to work. A lot of research and working of samples was worked up before a stitch ever went into the project and so far three of the ladies have finished their beautiful gloves – an adventure that started in April 2019. These gloves are full sized for you to wear – should you ever have an occasion worthy of them!
Yes, this is an expensive kit – let me tell you what is in it. It is embroidered on gorgeous duchess silk satin using a range of silks (Au Ver a Soie, Gumnut Yarns, Cascade House, Colour Streams, Gloriana) and specialty threads all highlighted with English Gilt metal threads. The embroidery is further embellished with garnets, peridots, lapis lazuli and pyrite gemstones and pearls – 2 full strings of beautiful cultured freshwater seed pearls – and gilt spangles. The glove is beautiful, supple leather and you have a choice of how you join it – my gloves, and the three others that are finished, are assembled with Elizabethan plaited braid stitch in gilt thread. On top of that, the glove is trimmed with Japanese silk ribbon and European gilt metal lace (which is the most expensive component of the project).
The instructions are full colour and have been turned into a spiral bound 76 page book. This is the first project with kit notes that come with a contents page! The kit also comes with two other books on gloves – one of which has the actual pattern for the glove part of the project – which is to be used in conjunction with my book of instructions of what to change and where.
There is a choice of colour for the ribbon and lining: Traditional Salmon ribbon and satin (which I used), Dusky Salmon ribbon with Salmon Satin, Blue ribbon and satin and a Blue/Green ribbon and satin. I am also offering a payment plan where the cost can be broken into three installments over three months ($415.00/$415.00/$420.00) with the kit being sent after the final payment, (the last of which the shipping will also be added). Of course, you are welcome to opt for full payment if you wish. The kit will be posted with insurance which will add to the cost of the shipping.
